Well, you’re not the only one!
I’m sure the following will sound familiar:
You, at your desk, drafting an important proposal which needs to reach a client before a certain time, when the phone rings. You’re in full flow with your drafting but you stop and pick it up. It could be a new client so you can’t ignore it.
The following conversation takes place:
Them: “Hello, is that Mr Barton,”
You: “Burton, yes, who are you?”
Them: “I work for XYZ, how are you today?”
You: “This is a sales call right?”
Them: “We’re not trying to sell you anything.”
You: “Well, how can I help?”
Them: “We just wanted to tell you about our latest offer on service xyz.”
You: “So you are selling something! I’m not interested! Goodbye.”
Frustrating, right? It’s even more maddening when the sales person who just called you isn’t paying attention and calls you again 2 minutes later!
There are a couple of things which can be done to stop this from happening.
You can register for The Corporate Telephone Preference Service (CTPS).
It is the central opt out register where as a company you can register your wish not to receive unsolicited sales and marketing telephone calls to either all of your organisation’s telephone numbers, or to certain numbers. It is a legal requirement that companies do not make such calls to numbers registered on the CTPS. It is free of charge and takes 28 days to take effect. This will not stop sales calls but will certainly reduce them. Companies must abide by the CTPS and it is their responsibility to check before carrying out a telesales campaign.
This, however, won’t stop the calls coming from companies who have bought a list where your details where added because you consented in some way in being contacted.
The other solution, which is far more efficient, is to use a Telephone Answering Service. All your calls will then be answered in your company name and messages sent to you straight away.
This means that you will no longer be distracted and interrupted by time wasters.
It doesn’t mean that you won’t be able to talk to potential new clients when they call, though! Some of our clients, for example, have asked us to transfer new clients over to a number of their choice straight away to them. The benefits are numerous since it also makes your company looks bigger than it is if you’re a sole trader based at home.
Where sales calls are concerned, we take the message and tell them you will call back if it’s of interest. Since you won’t call back, the next time they call and they always do, we can gently tell them to draw their own conclusions…You could call us the ultimate gatekeepers!
